John Hughes

Managing Director, HMH Civils Ltd

John Hughes co-founded HMH Civils Ltd in 2013 alongside Gerard May and Mick Hammond, bringing with him extensive expertise in groundwork, infrastructure systems, and specialist retaining structures. Under his strategic leadership, the company has flourished into a major regional force in civil engineering across the North East, Yorkshire, and the Humber.

From Groundwork to Guiding Growth

John began his career at just 16 years old as a ground-worker—a humble start that laid the foundation for a deep understanding of construction processes. Rising through the ranks, he honed his craft and operational insight, ultimately setting the stage for a successful leadership journey at HMH.

Partnering for Exceptional Standards

Since inception, John has directed the company’s technical and operational strategy, working closely with Gerard May—who oversees finances—to scale HMH’s turnover from around £7 million in its early years to £40 million by year four, and ultimately to £56 million in 2021. Together, they have since chosen to steady growth—maintaining turnover around the £45 million mark to ensure sustained quality and client satisfaction.

Building a Culture of Excellence

John’s leadership embodies HMH’s commitment to doing things right, first time, a principle that resonates through the company’s operations across civil engineering, groundworks, and external works. He plays a key role in nurturing a workplace where team members feel supported, and aligned with both client goals and company values—a collaborative ethos that reflects their close-knit culture.

Local Impact, Regional Reputation

Known for tackling complex projects, HMH under John’s direction has delivered high-profile works for clients like Vistry Partnerships and Keepmoat Homes—including major developments in Kirkleatham (Redcar), Brackenhoe (Middlesbrough), and Scotswood (Newcastle). One standout achievement is the delivery of over a kilometre of nine-metre-high retaining walls in the Scotswood regeneration—one of the most ambitious projects of its kind in the North of England.

A Future Built on Quality and Community

John remains dedicated to a growth strategy rooted in sustainable excellence. He champions internal talent development, mentorship, and apprenticeship schemes, and supports initiatives that enhance work-life balance—values that ensure HMH not only succeeds but endures in the communities it serves.
